Books in to movies

Made in response to someone trying to explain why a movie of a book can never be a good thing and, as a result, should never be made

I think you need to understand the movie industry more. The only things books and movies have in common is that they both have a story. Taking the story from a book and putting it on the screen is very difficult.

Firstly you need to arrange the scenes in such a way that the movie has a wide appeal and is not too confusing to the mainstream consumer. Movies cannot viably have too many subplots and as such, only what is deemed the most essential content will be included in the film.

Budget is also a HUGE factor in the movie. Let’s say there are 5 big scenes in a book that all involve explosions, magic and all that fancy stuff. So you have to hire pyrotechnicians, safety managers, animators, sound recorders, tech support etc. etc. etc. That is a huge cost… multiplied by five. If you can’t afford it you can’t put it in the film.

There are so many things that hinder the making of a book adaptation that the movie will never satisfy the fans because there will never be a perfect adaptation. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the movie itself is bad.
